Ok, hear me out. I know this is going to be a controversial topic for some...
"But I'm socializing my dog!" "My dog loves other dogs!" "It gives him all the exercise he needs!" I hear you say...
Honestly, stop now. My skin is crawling. Here’s what’s ACTUALLY going on at the dog park:
Health Risks
Dog parks are a breeding ground for parasites, fleas, and diseases. I can guarantee you that not all the dogs in that park are vaccinated or healthy. Not to mention the number of dogs who eat other dogs' feces.
Behavioral Issues
Aggression, reactivity, and negative interactions are common at dog parks. Dog fights can cause serious injury and, in some cases, death.
Lack of Supervision
Many people at dog parks are on their phones, have zero recall on their dogs, and no idea where their dog is or which other dog it's interacting with. Often, the dog is at the other end of the park. How are these people advocating for their dog at all?
Overstimulation
This one I cannot stress enough. Dogs are communicating with us CONSTANTLY! It is your responsibility as the guardian of these beautiful animals to understand them and learn how THEY communicate. What is your dog's body language telling you? Are they relaxed, loose-bodied, and play-bowing? Or is their body tight, ears pinned back, tail tucked, or stress panting? Not all dogs like other dogs, and throwing them into the middle of a busy dog park is NOT their idea of a good time. In fact, it can make them turn reactive!
Environmental Hazards
Dog parks can contain broken glass, toxic plants, sharp objects, and other hazards.
Finally, I would like to close by saying please, PLEASE, do not take your CHILDREN or FOOD into a public dog park.
Rant over, thanks for reading guys and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out!
